Trương Tân was born in Hanoi, graduated from Hanoi Fine Arts College (1982), Hanoi University of Fine Arts (1989, now Vietnam University of Fine Arts) and held a professorship in this school for nearly a decade (1989–1998)*.
Trương Tân's diverse practice includes painting, performance, installation, sculpture and ceramics. Through his work, he challenges social convention, questioning themes of identity and freedom of speech. As a come out gay artist, Trương Tân’s work pioneers the discussion of gender and sexuality in art, questions national identity and its intersection with gender stereotypes, explores perceptions of homosexuality, and explores gender identity. homosexuality in the context of a conservative societty.
