Installation Art

Installation Art is the term generally used to describe artwork using various objects and materials to construct 3-dimensional structures, which are often site-specific and exist in a certain conventional period of time.

Installation Art is among the contemporary art forms, along with Video and Performance Art, introduced to Vietnam in the early 1990s and immediately embraced by local artists. While Video- and Performance Art require some specialized skills and are difficult to access, Installation Art is the most experimented art form by local artists and remains one of the most popular contemporary art practices today. It is also perhaps the art form with which Vietnamese artists have made the most profound and continuous impression in the major international cultural events and on map of the art world, such as documenta (Germany), Singapore Biennale (Singapore), Asia-Pacific Triennale (Australia), Yokohama Biennale (Japan) and Venice Biennale (Italia) to name a few. Installations by Vietnamese artists also featured in exhibitions and displays of most important museums and art institutes in the world, such as the MOMA - Museum of Modern Art (New York, USA), Smithsonian American Art Museum (Washington, USA), Mori Art Museum (Tokyo, Japan), Haus der Kunst (Munich, Germany) among others.

Along with the development of technology, digital and online platforms, the intersection of perception in creative practice, Installation Art is practiced by many artists of other disciplines such as Music, Performing, Theater, and the derivatives that emerged in many other arts.

Among the most outstanding Vietnamese artists who practice Installation Art include: Trần Lương, Nguyễn Minh Phước, Trương Tân, Nguyễn Minh Thành, Dinh Q. Lê, Danh Võ, Tiffany Chung, Trần Nguyễn Ưu Đàm, Trần Tuấn, Tuấn Mami, Nguyễn Phương Linh, Oanh Phi Phi, Phan Thảo Nguyên, Nguyễn Huy Hoàng, Bùi Công Khánh, Nguyễn Mạnh Hùng, Phan Thảo Nguyên, Trương Công Tùng, ect.
