Phi Phi Oanh, born in Houston, USA; graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Parsons School of Design (2002), and a Masters in Art and Research from the Complutense University of Madrid (Spain, 2012).

In 2004 she was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to study traditional Vietnamese sơn mài (lacquer painting) in Hanoi. It has since become a key medium in her practice.  Phi Phi Oanh’s work combines sơn mài with new materials and technologies to extend the scope of the medium as image, reflect on cross cultural histories and situate the medium in a broader art discourse.
