Nguyễn Mạnh Hùng was born in Hanoi, graduated from Hanoi University of Fine Arts (2002).

Nguyễn Mạnh Hùng's artistic practice is diverse, including painting, large-scale installation and sound art. Often being expressed in a realistic style, his works employ playful and satirical elements to reflect humorous situations arising from the rapid but intermittent process of urbanization and modernization in Vietnam.

Nguyễn Mạnh Hùng is also known as the artistic director of Nhà Sàn Studio (2008–2011), now Nhà Sàn Collective, an artist-run contemporary art space in Hanoi founded in 1998.
